Sequoyah_Sherrill_SKG_Role_Model_photoHi Sunkissed Girlz! My name is Sequoyah and I'm the SKG Role Model of the Month for January! I am a senior at Hampton University and love my school. It's a Historically Black University (also called HBCU)! I participate in tons of activities, including captain of the Hampton Cheerleading Squad. I was young just like you, dealing with similar issues... but now I can tell my story. Be inspired and enjoy!

Q: In what grade did you start thinking about and planning for college?
A: I started thinking about college in 9th or 10th grade. As I was growing up, I've always wanted to accomplish great things. But it wasn't until high school that I started researching colleges and learning about scholarships.

Q:
In what grade did you fill out the applications to attend college?

A: Spring semester of my junior year in high school.

Q: What is your major?
A: Psychology.

Q: What kinds of jobs can you get with that degree?
A:
With a Bachelor's degree in psychology, a person can work in the field of social work or as juvenile probation officer. A person can also conduct research. However, most of the time, a graduate with a psychology major is encouraged to get a Masters or PhD after completing the Bachelor's degree.

Q: And what specifically are your future career goals?
A:
I would like to do marriage and family therapy! I would love to help bring the traditional Black family back, where there are two parents in the household. I dream of building my own clinic.

Q: Is this what you wanted to be when you were a little girl?
A: No, when I was younger, I planned to be a lawyer. When I started college, I hoped to major in psychology and minor in pre-law so that I could go into the field of Forensic Psychology. By my junior year, I realized that I was no longer interested in that career.

Advice_on_college_5Q: Is college easy or is it hard?
A: College is not easy, but it's also not hard. It's just difficult at times.

Q: Do you study and do school work all the time?
A: No, I do not study and do school work all the time. I keep up with my school work by doing it all in bulk, so that I'm not constantly working on it everyday. I really try to balance my academic and personal life.

Q: Are you also involved on campus?
A:
Yes, I'm very involved on campus, and sometimes overwhelmed. First I
am the captain of the Hampton Cheerleading Squad. I also hold leadership positions, for example in the Student Government Association’s Women’s Caucus, NAACP College Council, Peer Counseling Organization, Psychology Club, Pennsylvania Pre Alumni President, and Relay for Life (Team Captain/Recruitment). Lastly, I hold memberships in honor societies.

Q: Which one of your activities takes up the most of your time?
Sequoyah_cheer_in_actionA: Cheerleading definitely takes up the majority of my time.

Q: How do you balance it all?
A: I balance all of my activities through time management skills and just by being responsible.
