Staying fit is really important; but so is healthy hair. Sometimes it feels like we can’t have them both. If I get my hair done, then I can’t go swimming. If I sweat at cheerleading practice, then my hair looks a mess the next morning. What’s the solution?
If you wear your hair naturally curly:
You are in the best position to have everything that you want! Wearing your hair naturally curly gives you tons of flexibility when it comes to working out or doing activities that get your hair wet. If you get your hair twisted, you can work out for two weeks straight and still have a great style. If your hair is super curly, you can even wash it and the twists will stay in. You can then wear cute twist-out styles for another week. Also, don’t underestimate the wash-n-go afro. For a little more texture in your afro, take big chunks of your hair, twist it, take the twists out in the morning, and use your fingers to tease it out. You will have a funky look for several days.
If you wear chemically treated hair:
It’s not as easy to stay fit while managing hair that has been chemically treated, but it’s possible! The most important thing you can do is buy a close fitting headband that you can wear while working out. The headband will keep your hair from getting frizzy at the roots. You can also wrap your hair by combing or brushing it in one direction around your head and then pinning it to keep it in place (see photo). If you want to swim, the best advice is to wear a swim cap. Click here to see pictures of cute swim caps that we found.
Regardless of how you wear your hair, you don’t have to sacrifice fitness or fun to have great, healthy hair. Another option is to wear braids, especially during the summer months when swimming is at the top of your to-do list! |
